How to install
It is fairly straight forward to install ns 1.04 for Steam but, do make sure you read the following before doing so.If you have a clean install of the current version of ns then you should have no problems. However, it is best to check and see whether this file exists: ns/events/ParalysisGun.sc
If it does then delete it, as it is not needed anymore. You should only have this file if you have a current version of ns installed over a ns 1.04 install.
If you do not have this file then great :)
Simply run the install.exe and install as you normally would to your steamapps/email/half-life folder.
How to play NS 1.04
Before you play ns 1.04 you must do one very important thing. Run the included switch.bat program located in the ns folder. This bat file will rename ns folder to nsbackup and the ns104 folder to ns. And change your fmod.dlls around. This is needed as ns 1.04 will not run unless it is in the ns folder and it requires an older version of fmod.dllHow to Play latest version of NS again
Simply run switch.bat again. This will reverse the process giving you a neweer version of fmod.dll and changing the folders so latest version of ns is in the 'ns' folder.
Note, if you are more comfortable in doing this manually then you may manually rename the ns and ns104 folders and fmod.dll. The actual names of the version you are not using does not matter as long as the version you wish to play is in the "ns" folder and you rename fmod.dll appropiately. Remember though, if you do this manually you will not be able to use switch.bat at a later date.

You are using the wrong fmod.dll either, run switch.bat to switch to the correct fmod.dll or reinstall ns 1.04When loading a map I hear sounds and then the game just crashes, with no error messages.
This is because you are trying to run ns 1.04 from the ns104 or another directory. NS 1.04 has to use the 'ns' folder so either run the supplied switch.bat or rename your ns folder to nsbackup and your ns104 folder to ns.When running switch.bat i get the following error:
A duplicate file name exists, or the file cannot be found.
The system cannot find the file specified.
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

This is caused by not having a clean ns folder as the install guide states. You have a old 1.04 version of ns mixed in with a current version of ns (probably through upgrading from the original ns)
There are 2 fixes:1)Backup your configs and uninstall the current version of ns and ns 1.04. Then make sure your \steamapps\email\half-life\ns foler is deleted.
Then install the current version of ns followed by ns 1.04 and and use the supplied switch.bat to switch between ns 1.04 mode and the current mode.
2)Check and make sure your ns folder is the latest version of ns and you have a ns104 folder and that its contents are correct.
If so, find and delete this file ns/events/ParalysisGun.sc . It is unneeded in the current version of ns (as paralysise no longer exists for the onos) do not delete it from the ns 1.04 folder nor the ns 1.04 folder if you are currently in 1.04 mode.
